Industrial Design/Transportation Design

Work in Progress.

Industrial Design – Bachelor of Arts

What kind of designers does the world need?
This is the question that occupies students and teachers in the B.A. degree course of study in the field of Industrial Design. You will deal with current social challenges, the conscious employment of resources and the development of suitable design solutions.

Building on a foundation study, conceptual and experimental project work is at the core of the six-semester course of study. It integrates knowledge-based classes in sociology, engineering and design studies.
We will familiarise you with the methods and tools of design thinking. We will support you in formulating questions, developing ideas and drafting concepts. You will work on independent, aesthetically convincing solutions for products,
applications and systems as well as their lucid visualisation and realisation. You will carry out your experiments in analogue and digital workshops. A wide range of studios and student workplaces are at your disposal in the university’s workshops.

Industrial Design can be studied as a major or minor. As a major, it can be combined with the following minors: Transportation Design, Communication Design or Media Studies.

The B.A. is a first profession-qualifying degree. At the same time it qualifies you for design-oriented and academic M.A. degree courses of study. At the HBK Braunschweig you have the opportunity to enrol for a M.A. degree course of study in Industrial Design/Transportation Design with the option of a subsequent doctorate in the field of design studies.

Industrial Design/Transportation Design – Master of Arts

The Master’s degree course in Industrial Design/Transportation Design requires intense dealings with the future. During the four-semester, projectbased course of study you will examine and design products, systems and services.

One focus is the concentrated occupation with the theme of mobility as one of the essential driving forces of modern society. The project modules and the Master’s thesis are the sites of individual thematic questions and experiences. The joy in experimentation and the special dedication are in particular demanded here. Research, conceptual and creative development of ideas as well as model making are among the assignments that you will have to carry out independently.

Context modules convey the academic perspectives of engineering, design and social sciences. You acquire the foundations for a project-oriented application of the relevant theories, methods and bodies of knowledge. You can use the beneficial offerings in the professionalization module and in the elective subject for your own professional and personal development.

With the successful completion of the Master´s degree course of study you will have acquired conceptual design competencies and be prepared for everyday tasks in development teams, design and engineering offices or have perspectives for an academic career. We are looking forward to hearing from motivated applicants with a qualifying Bachelor’s degree in the technical, design or social science fields.
